Glendora Unified School District
Glendora Unified School District is committed to providing students with a strong, comprehensive health program that encourages a lifestyle free of drug, alcohol and tobacco products. All of Glendora's health education programs are operated under the guidance of the Safe and Drug Free Schools and Community Advisory Committee. Members meet quarterly to review the program and to advise the District regarding various health issues. Glendora Unified School District's committee has been instrumental in coordinating aspects of health such as health services, health education, psychological and counseling services, safe school environment and parent/community involvement.
Health education begins in Kindergarten and continues through the high school years in Glendora's School District. At the elementary level, Glendora Unified School District utilizes the “Too Good For Drugs” curriculum, which includes lessons for drug, alcohol and tobacco prevention, as well as managing emotions. Sixth and eight grade students at Sandburg and Goddard Middle School's receive lessons from “Too Good for Drugs” in their science classes, and ninth grade studentsl utilizes “Too Good for Drugs” in their health course at Glendora High School. As per California Education Code 51930-51939, students in grades seven and nine receive a unit of sex education that provides students with “the knowledge and skills necessary to protect his or her sexual and reproductive health from unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, and encourages students to develop healthy attitudes concerning adolescent growth and development, and marriage and family. A parent may opt their child out of this unit by completing an excusal form distributed by the health teacher, or contact Glendora Unified School District's Educational Services at 963-1611, extension 350.
In accordance with the federal No Child Left Behind Act, Glendora Unified School District administers a health survey to all students in grades 5, 7, 9, and 11. This survey, the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS), is administered in October during every odd year (2003, 2005, etc.). The data is published and sent home to parents, and it used to set future goals for the District's health program. Parents of fifth graders must give permission for their child to participate in the survey, whereas parents of seventh, ninth, and eleventh graders may fill out a No Consent form if they wish to exclude their child from the survey.
